According to the American Medical Massage Association (AMMA), medical massage is: "A system of manually-applied techniques designed to reduce pain, establish normal tissue tension, create a positive-tissue environment and to normalize the movement of the musculoskeletal system. It is a scientifically based method of manual therapy that utilizes a clear understanding of the scientific principles of physiology that affect connective tissue. We avoid using techniques that stimulate pain responses in the nervous system. |
The Medical Massage uses Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy, (OMT), Counter Stain, Muscle Energy Therapy, (MET), and Trigger Point Therapy. It also helps to improve circulation and lessen the pain being felt, by helping to loosen and relax the muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints of the body.
Myofascial release is a whole body approach used to passively stretch the soft tissue, thereby releasing tension throughout the body. Acupressure is an ancient healing art that uses the fingers to press key points on the surface of the skin to stimulate the body's natural self-curative abilities. Acupuncture and acupressure use the same points, but acupuncture employs needles, while acupressure uses the gentle but firm pressure of hands or fingers. Trigger point release is used on a hyperirritable tender spot in an abused muscle that refers pain ("triggers" pain) to other muscles. This is why the pain in your head may be coming from a neck muscle and the pain in your neck from a shoulder muscle and the pain in your low back from a hip muscle. If the trigger points are not treated, they can be the culprits in lingering pain even after an injury has apparently healed, and the reason why the headache, neckache, and backache keep returning year after year. Some of the causes of trigger point activity in your muscles are stress, excessive chilling, injury, overuse, strain, as well as chemical, drugs, alcohol, and environmental pollutants. Other healing and treatment techniques that can be used are: Deep Tissue Techniques Connective Tissue Massage Lymphatic Drainage Techniques Neuro-Fascial Massage Acupressure Stretching Techniques |

Headaches Tension headaches can be caused by stress or anxiety and can be effectively reduced or eliminated by massage treatments. Sinus headaches are best addressed by face massage, allowing us to drain and cleanse the sinus cavities. Migraine headaches are caused by either impingement of the nerves in the neck or chemical imbalances. Massage can address the impinged nerve problem. Now is a good time to allow a massage professional the opportunity to rid you of your headache discomfort naturally. Neck, Shoulder, Back, Arm and Leg Pain Many people are now finding that massage therapy can help to reverse the vicious cycle that many pain sufferers are in constantly from chronic pain. Massage therapy can provide individuals who suffer from either mild or chronic pain with the following benefits: Blood circulation will improve. There will be improvement to the muscle's tone. It will also help with system detoxification through the lymphatic system. Many patients report that they have much more joint flexibility than they had previously, and, by reducing stress, it provides the patient with a greater sense of well-being. There are many forms of massage which can be used in helping with the relief of neck, shoulder, back, arm, and leg pain; however, each style depends on the individual person's needs and specific preferences. |
